Benefiting Member States
Zambia
Zambia has a long history of cross-border mobility for labour and employment purposes. Despite the contribution of labour migration to the economy, Zambia does not have a labour migration policy nor strategy for comprehensive labour migration governance. Accordingly, the country has not managed to fully harness the development potential of labour migration through remittances as well as to ensure the protection of migrant workers in line with international best practices.
It is within this context that the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) requested technical support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to develop a Labour Migration Strategy and Action Plan for Zambia.
The overall objective of the proposed project is to strengthen the capacities of the GRZ to enhance labour migration governance in Zambia. The objective will be achieved through one outcome, namely, the GRZ successfully develops a gender-sensitive Labour Migration Strategy and Action Plan for evidence-based effective labour migration governance in Zambia.
In order to achieve the above, a gender-sensitive labour migration assessment will be undertaken (Output 1.1), and a Labour Migration Strategy and Action Plan will be drafted through a series of consultative meetings (Output 1.2).
