Mountain areas worldwide are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Global warming is projected to have devastating impacts for mountain systems. The current and projected impacts of climate change in mountain areas have and will continue to have strong implications in terms of different forms of human mobility. Changes in mountain ecosystems imply shaping population movements of different kinds, including transhumance, pastoralism, labour migration, displacement. However, decision-makers and practitioners are often not equipped to address the human migration implication of climate change in mountain areas. This project will contribute to an enhanced response to human mobility challenges and opportunities in the context of adverse impacts of climate change in mountain areas of Ecuador. The project will look at building bridges with a mirror project in Kazakhstan to promote a joint approach to climate change challenges from a human mobility perspective in mountain areas. This will be accomplished through two separate components: 1. Research and capacities: The project will contribute to enhancing the global evidence base on human mobility in contexts of disasters, environmental degradation, and climate change in mountain areas from the perspective of Ecuador, particularly in high mountains, contributing to the dissemination of new information. To this end, the project will set the basis for a panel study in coordination with national actors. The initiative will also develop the capacities of national stakeholders and ultimately enhance awareness on addressing environmental migration and disaster displacement in high mountain areas. 2.Enabling policy support and advancing collaboration: The second component will be focused on promoting dialogue between mountainous countries of the region to support policy coherence on the migration, environment, and climate (MECC) nexus. The project will also conduct a MECC policy analysis to assess the extent to which national policies, laws and strategies are aligned with the recommendations of the Task Force of Displacement of the Warsaw International Mechanism on Loss and Damage of the UNFCCC. The collaboration will be strengthened with the Mountain Partnership and other cross-regional bodies to promote attention to human mobility-related challenges in the context of climate change
