In recent years, Sudan has seen a significant increase in irregular migration through its territory as part of migrant and refugee flows to Europe via North Africa and to other destinations. Consequently, transnational networks of migrant smugglers have emerged to facilitate irregular migration from the horn of Africa into and through Sudan. State Border management institutions face a number of challenges to effectively manage migration flows in Sudan. In particular, the Port Sudan Point of Entry (PoE) is a heavily used crossing point that requires enhancements to the capacity of border officials to extend support to migrants, in order to ensure its effectiveness and functionality. In light of the above, the objective of this project is to contribute to rights-based and migrant-centric border management and services in Sudan. The project will seek to do so by supporting border officials to provide adequate and gender-sensitive support to travellers and migrants based on a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities and knowledge on humanitarian border management (HBM) (Outcome 1). This will be achieved by improving the knowledge of border officials at the Port Sudan PoE on their roles and responsibilities under HBM and on the gender-sensitive needs of different groups of migrants or travellers (Output 1.1). Additionally, the project will provide support to border officials at the Port Sudan PoE for the future digitalisation and sharing of immigration data with the General Directorate of Passports and Immigration within the Ministry of Interior through strengthened capacity to collect, process and store information on travellers (Outcome 2). This will be achieved by providing access to border officials at the Port Sudan PoE to improved facilities and training them to collect and manage gender and age disaggregated immigration data digitally and improve travel document inspection (Output 2.1).
