Gabon is a transit and destination country for many migrants, most of whom come from neighbouring countries in West and Central Africa. Given this fact, the risk of human trafficking is a serious concern for the Government of Gabon (GoG). Despite the actions taken by the Gabonese authorities, civil society and technical partners, structural challenges persist in terms of counter-trafficking. Actors working in the field have identified numerous recommendations to improve the identification, intervention, information, guidance and assistance of vulnerable migrants in Gabon. In light of the above, the objective of this project is to contribute to the fight against human trafficking by strengthening existing national mechanisms in Gabon. The project will seek to do so by supporting the GoG to adopt strengthened gender-sensitive institutional tools to counter human trafficking (Outcome 1) by developing a gender-sensitive national strategy to combat human trafficking in Gabon (Output 1.1) and by developing the capacity of the GoG, state institutions and civil society actors on counter-trafficking including gender considerations (Output 1.2). In addition, the project will lead the GoG to strengthen cross-border cooperation to combat human trafficking (Outcome 2) by enabling the GoG to collaborate with Beninese authorities on human trafficking issues through the organization of a study visit to Benin during which a meeting of the Gabon-Benin Permanent Monitoring Commission will be held in accordance with the bilateral agreement on counter-trafficking signed by the two countries (Output 2.1).
