El Salvador is vulnerable to disasters, climate change and environmental degradation, and this has led to a need to improve migration governance in relation to environmental factors. Environmental migration is becoming an increasingly evident reality in the region. As migration becomes a common risk prevention strategy in marginalised and vulnerable areas of Central America, it is estimated that up to 10.5 million environmental migrants will move to urban centres in the region by 2050. El Salvador could see up to 173,000 environmental migrants moving to urban areas by 2050, including San Salvador and medium-sized cities. This project aims to contribute to strengthening the governance of migration and/or internal displacement in El Salvador in the context of disasters, climate change and environmental degradation. To achieve this objective, evidence-based and reliable information on migration and/or internal displacement dynamics in El Salvador related to disasters, climate change and environmental degradation will be made available. Moreover, training related to migration governance, the relationship between human mobility and environmental factors and the main challenges that this implies for the coming years will be provided to key government actors. Furthermore, a regional workshop to exchange good practices, lessons learned and knowledge between key actors in the region will be conducted. Meetings to raise awareness about the importance of mainstreaming migration in national plans, policies, strategies and reports related to disasters, climate change and environmental degradation will also be conducted. Finally, technical support will be provided to government officials from El Salvador in their preparations for negotiations in multilateral meetings on climate change, such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The expected outcome is that the Government of El Salvador incorporates migration issues related to disasters, climate change and environmental degradation in pertinent initiatives and strategic decisions.
