An important path to Europe lies in the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean from the West and Central African coastline to the Canary Islands, and an increasing number of migrants are opting for the West Atlantic migration route, because of cheaper travel costs and also due to the fact that many terrestrial border crossings have become increasingly difficult due to restrictions put in place by governments to limit the risks of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In light of increased maritime departures from Senegalese coasts along the West African Atlantic Route, and the growing number of shipwrecks, the project aims to contribute to strengthening the capacity of the Government of Senegal to provide gender-sensitive and rights-based post-disembarkation assistance and protection to vulnerable migrants.
In order to achieve the above objective, the following outputs will be delivered: 1) Gender sensitive and rights-based post-disembarkation capacities of State and non-state actors in relation to irregular migration will be assessed; 2) Departure data will be collected by IOM community informants to inform the development of Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs) on disembarkation; 3) Gender-sensitive SOPs will be developed with the government and in collaboration with non-state actors, aiming at strengthening coordination mechanism, including referral of migrants to specialized assistance structures; 4) Key partners will be trained on first aid, mental health and psychosocial support to vulnerable migrants through a Training of Trainer session; and finally, 5) Gender-sensitive awareness-raising campaigns will be conducted, informing migrants and local communities on the rights of migrants and the risks associated with irregular migration pathways.
