Sri Lanka
Cognizant of the fundamental importance of migration-related data for evidence-based decision-making, Sri Lanka, with the support of the IOM, has already invested in mapping and strengthening its data collection capacities, specifically in the migration field (MGI assessments, 2018 and 2021); thanks to these exercises, the country has been able to identify the gaps that hamper effective migration data collection, management, and dissemination.
On these grounds, this project will contribute to long-term efforts by Sri Lanka towards data-driven, evidence-based policymaking for migration management; in particular, the project will work towards the institutionalisation, by relevant government stakeholders, of a robust mechanism for the collection and dissemination of migration-related data, aimed at promoting and sustaining gender-sensitive, evidence-based practices for the implementation of key global frameworks to which Sri Lanka has actively committed (Agenda 2030 and the GCM). The project envisions, firstly, to establish and operationalise a national Data Task Force, and the subsequent development of recommendations on enhancing migration-related data processes, based on a comprehensive mapping exercise. Secondly, the project foresees supporting the development and launch of a fully operational National Migration Data Portal (NMDP), via which the government and relevant stakeholders would access to structured, gender-sensitive migration-related data; Finally, the project aims to ensure that identified, key government officials working in the field of migration have the skills and knowledge to manage the NMDP and sustainably capitalize on its added value.
