In light of the socioeconomic challenges present in South America, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, an intervention that addresses the socioeconomic needs of returnees, migrants and host communities is needed in the region.
As migrants are returning home due to economic hardship, others are leaving due to the same factors.
To best support Governments in South America in strengthening socioeconomic recovery post-pandemic, this project aims to develop a socioeconomic integration “toolkit” for government officials to be better equipped to facilitate the (re)integration of migrants and returnees in national economies and thus empower migrants and returnees as actors for sustainable development.
The project will aim to strengthen the capacity of South American Governments to empower migrants and returnees to act as change agents for broad-based development, particularly for COVID-19 socioeconomic recovery, through the implementation of socioeconomic (re)integration initiatives. The participating countries include Argentina, Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru.
This will be achieved through two main components:
1) Conducting a gender-sensitive rapid evidence assessment to build an evidence-base on socioeconomic (re)integration in South America for toolkit development and implementation and;
2) Piloting the toolkit and drafting a national implementation plan for socioeconomic (re)integration in the pilot countries.
