The surge of Suriname's migration occurred between the 1970s and 1980s with education being the principle reason behind earlier migration. According to the United Nations, the current net migration rate for Suriname in 2021 is -1.7 per 1000 population, which indicates that quite a portion of Suriname's population lives in the diaspora. However, the government has not yet fully harnessed the development potential of the Surinamese diaspora. This may be attributed to the absence of a diaspora policy framework as well as a comprehensive and coordinated strategy to guide the diaspora engagement process. In light of this, the overall objective of this initiative is to increase the diaspora's commitment and engagement with its country of origin, through the implementation of a government-led gender sensitive diaspora engagement policy. The project will deliver the following outputs: 1) the establishment of a coordination mechanism; 2) the enhancement and revamping of the national Suriname diaspora mapping website; 3) the organization of training workshops to build competencies for policy development and effective migration management; and finally, 4) the development of a draft evidence based national Diaspora Engagement Policy document along with a five-year action plan.
