The Mauritanian city of Chami, referred to as the country's “capital of gold”, was historically sparsely populated. Yet, the discovery of gold led to a rapid population growth as mining companies settled and created attractive economic opportunities for migrant workers, particularly from Sudan and Mali. Since 2013, the population of Chami has more than quadrupled. However, very limited accurate information is available about the situation in Chami, including the difficulties encountered by labour migrants and their protection needs. This project will contribute to strengthening local labour migration management in Chami, with a focus on access to health resources and protection services.
