Pakistan
The objective of this project is to strengthen the Government of Pakistan’s ability to address and mitigate the impacts of climate change induced migration and displacement. Drawing upon IOM’s experience in supporting governments with migration management, IOM will work with the Government of Pakistan’s Federal Ministry of Climate Change, Federal and Provincial Planning and Development Departments, National and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities, Provincial Urban Planning Units, and other relevant governmental agencies to enhance the capacity to integrate internal migration into future climate change adaptation planning and policy.
Under Outcome 1, IOM will conduct research through a service provider, in a bid to improve knowledge, data, and information on the socio-economic impacts of human mobility related to climate change in Pakistan. The findings, together with recommendations from beneficiaries and stakeholders, will allow for an improved understanding of internal migration patterns and the role of migration as an adaptive strategy to climate change. Utilizing this new knowledge, under Outcome 2, migration management will then be integrated into climate change adaptation planning. To understand the current needs of capacity building for government officials and policymakers, IOM will undertake a needs-assessment exercise to gauge challenges and concerns related to Migration, Environment and Climate Change (MECC) in the country. Based on the this needs-assessment, IOM will organize workshops to provide relevant stakeholders with the knowledge and technical skills necessary to integrate planning and preparedness for human mobility into climate change adaptation policies and frameworks. This will lead to the integration of migration-related considerations into the National Adaptation Plan process, ultimately contributing to the overall objective.
