Over the last 20 years, the average temperature has increased in Azerbaijan by an estimated 1.09°C, and extreme temperature events and droughts have become more common. Migration – in its different forms (e.g., disaster displacement, planned evacuation, pastoralism, labour migration, planned relocation, etc.) – will be shaped by these climate impacts. The national planning and communication initiatives need to recognize the different forms of migration in the context of climate change and their diverse outcomes. This will contribute to creating enabling conditions necessary to unlock the adaptation potential of migration and reduce the risks related to it. The objective of this project is, therefore, to contribute to the Government of Azerbaijan's strategic vision on climate change adaptation, by supporting it to mainstream migration considerations in climate change policies and climate change perspectives in migration-related policies (Outcome 1). In order to do so, the project plans to first increase the capacities of stakeholders and national experts on the migration, environment, and climate change (MECC) nexus (Output 1.1). Second, the project will contribute to more evidence on the MECC nexus to guide policy development by conducting a gender-sensitive case study on the impacts of climatic and environmental hazards on springs and their influence on migration patterns in Azerbaijan (Output 1.2). Third, the project will provide stakeholders with the tools and coordination mechanisms to mainstream the MECC nexus in a gender-sensitive manner into the National Adaptation Plan of Azerbaijan (Output 1.3). Finally, the project will make the MECC nexus more visible in Azerbaijan by developing a short video and conducting public outreach activities (Output 1.4).
