Central Asia is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change, with warming levels projected to be higher than the global mean leading to more heat extremes. Kyrgyzstan depends on the increasingly scarce meltwater from glaciers for water supplies and to generate electricity. By 2050, it is estimated that 6.6 million people in Kyrgyzstan will be at risk from the impacts of climate change. Since there are fiscal limitations to public spending on climate action in many developing countries, national governments use various instruments to mobilise private capital. A clearer understanding of what can motivate diaspora members and compatriots to support climate action in country of origin would contribute to climate change adaptation or resilience planning in Kyrgyzstan as well as enable relevant institutions to develop policy measures to strengthen climate change programmes. Over 24 months, this project will support the Government of Kyrgyzstan to improve its knowledge on channelling diaspora funding to support climate action. This objective will be achieved by generating evidence on motivational factors among diaspora members with regard to supporting climate action and improving awareness and capacities of national stakeholders, particularly relevant government institutions, about the role of diaspora funding in the context of climate finance.
