This project will contribute to the fight against air pollution and adoption of the ‘Healthy City Vision’ approach through enhancing migrants’ and other stakeholders’ awareness of air pollution and its impacts on the communities of migrants living in Bishkek. This entails three major steps.
Firstly, internal and international migrants will be better equipped to take action in their communities to reduce air pollution due to increased awareness of air pollution. This will be achieved through a comprehensive assessment of factors contributing to air pollution in the new settlements where migrants live, organizing training and community events for migrants and host communities, adapting and producing culturally and gender-sensitive IEC materials to be disseminated via social media outlets and during the events, as well as supporting migrants’ community health and environmental project ideas. Secondly, relevant government officials and other stakeholders will recognize the role of migrants and commit to including migrants in the “Healthy City Vision” initiative through training of government representatives on air pollution and infrastructural ways to reduce it, as well as building a municipality-led Task Force that will comprise of representatives of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Oversight of the Kyrgyz Republic, Bishkek City Mayor’s Office, NGOs, academia, and experts. The Task Force will additionally act as a Steering Committee to select community health and environmental projects. Finally, trained migrant leaders and government representatives will engage in the existing dialogue platforms on air pollution and the city’s public health initiatives and present their community projects as successful and efficient models to learn from.
