There is a gap in specialist and comprehensive training for media on the multiple dimensions of migration, even though the media plays a fundamental role in shaping public opinion and discourse on this expansive subject. The Global Migration and Media Academy (GMMA) aims to build a stronger base for ethical and accurate reporting by providing media professionals with adequate information to inform their reporting. GMMA will create mainstream, accredited modules in universities, strongly focused on inclusive, evidence-based ethical reporting and knowledge-sharing. Learning material will draw on the reach and expertise of the UN Migration network, UN Information centres, UN Department of Global Communications, media development organisations, international, regional and local media, academia and other key actors. The project seeks to improve media reporting standards and encourage balanced, accurate and positive migration stories. The overall objective is to contribute to improving the quality and quantity of accurate, diverse and balanced media reports about migration and support constructive public conversation and dialogue.
