This project aims to contribute to an increased common understanding of the complex linkages between migration & development and thus to enhance coherent and whole-of-government national policy making on diaspora issues. In order to achieve this, the project output will be the development of a comprehensive Trainer’s Manual on Migration & Development that will draw on research and handbooks developed by IOM in cooperation with other organizations, such as the GMG Handbook on Mainstreaming Migration into Development, the IOM/MPI Handbook on Developing a Road Map for Engaging Diasporas in Development and the JMDI Handbook on Migration for Development: A Bottom-Up Approach.
The proposed project aims to draw from the research of these handbooks and other recent reference materials to design a training course with effective training guidelines, course and module outlines, training tools and materials. The project will be implemented in four phases. During the first phase, a curriculum development specialist, in close coordination with the project partners and supported through an expert steering committee, will design and develop the curriculum with particular relevance to the North and West African context; during the second phase, a “field test” training on the English Manual will be organized for 20 policymakers and practitioners from the partner countries; in the third phase the Manual will be translated into French and Arabic; finally in the fourth phase, two Training of Trainers will be conducted (one in each target region) with a total of 40 qualified trainers from participating countries who will be trained in delivering the training on migration & development by using the Trainer’s Manual. Subsequently, the curriculum will be available for use by the qualified trainers as well as IOM staff and all requesting partner countries and in the framework of existing projects and cooperation (not funded in this project).
