Marshall Islands
The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) faces unique migration challenges and opportunities due to its geography, level of economic development, growing urbanization, increasing impact of climate change and natural hazards, as well as the Compact of Free Association (COFA) with the United States of America. However, the lack of an overarching national policy on migration as a crucial component of a comprehensive framework for good migration governance undermines the potential that migration can bring to the socioeconomic development of RMI. Additionally, there is a strong need for more national policies to guide RMI actions towards climate change adaptation in light of potential displacement, planned relocation and mobility schemes.
The objective of the project is therefore to contribute to improved migration governance in RMI through improved policy frameworks that enhance the benefits of migration for national development. Upon request of the RMI Government, IOM seeks to support RMI to develop a national migration policy, informed by gender considerations, in line with the country's National Strategic Plan 2020-2030. To do so, an interdepartmental working group will be established and will draft an evidence-based, gender-sensitive, policy document. This will be guided by research conducted and extensive capacity development. The availability of a policy document and an improved evidence base and analysis of migration trends will allow for targeted interventions and strengthened resource mobilization in the country.
