Niger is vulnerable to diseases such as AIDS, Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis. Because of the particularity of these diseases and their infectious nature, effective screening and provision of care is of upmost importance for the well-being of people on the move who run the risk to see their health deteriorate if treatment and monitoring options are not in place, without mentioning the risk of contaminating host communities as well. In light of the above, the objective of this project is to contribute to the fight against infectious diseases through the strengthening of health systems along migratory routes in Niger. This project proposes an approach based on five pillars: i) An assessment of the migrants' care framework in Niger and in the targeted countries, notably Algeria, Guinea, Libya and Nigeria, in order to establish a baseline and understand the needs related to screening and the provision of care to migrants; ii) strengthening of the capacities of the health authorities in the targeted screening and treatment centers, more particularly in the Agadez and Niamey regions; iii) the development and dissemination of a screening checklist focused on AIDS, Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis iv) the development and dissemination of specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the provision of care in the targeted centers; and finally, v) organization of two workshops, one aiming at training relevant stakeholders on the use of the SOPs as well as training them to become future trainers, and a second one which aims to discuss the findings of the assessment, and brainstorm on the sustainability of the project with key actors and potential donors.
