Migrant workers in Cambodia have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 related closures and job losses in sectors such as manufacturing, garment and tourism. Furthermore, over 176,000 Cambodians have returned from abroad since March 2020 due to the neighbouring countries’ economies impacted by the pandemic.
The overall objective of the proposed project is to contribute to socioeconomic recovery in Cambodia through improved skill training and access to employment opportunities for migrant workers impacted by COVID-19 related job losses. This will be achieved through: i) mainstreaming migrant workers affected by COVID-19 job and income losses in national socioeconomic recovery efforts; ii) strengthened upskilling and reskilling programmes; and iii) improved information on and access to new employment opportunities. The project will also increase the capacity of labour officials and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) authorities to provide more relevant skill training and improve access to information on new employment opportunities by promoting a job matching platform and related services provided by provincial job centres.
