Somalia - Seven Somali diaspora experts who have returned to Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Bosaso and Garowe from abroad to conduct short-term capacity building projects for government officials have just completed a “Training-of-Trainers” workshop conducted by IOM in collaboration with UNDP.

The two-day workshop assisted the group to learn how to transfer their knowledge and skills to staff in government institutions by developing a basic understanding of Training Needs Assessment (TNA) tools and techniques to be used in the field.

“The training was crucial for me; it is one thing to have so many years of experience, and another to be able to effectively transfer my knowledge and skills  to someone else within a short period of time,” says Muse Noor, a financial management expert from England.

The experts are enrolled in the ‘Qualified Expatriate Somali Technical Support – Migration for Development in Africa’ (QUESTS-MIDA) programme, which is funded by UNDP and jointly implemented by IOM and the Somali authorities.

The programme facilitates the transfer of skills, knowledge and experience from qualified Somali diaspora experts to public sector institutions. Over a period of three years, the QUESTS-MIDA programme has successfully placed 49 Somali diaspora experts in different government offices.

The seven experts who are currently on assignment are embedded in government institutions in Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Bosaso and Garowe.
