IOM Screens Documentaries on Migration at Spanish Cultural Center in Nicaragua

Nicaragua - IOM will this week screen two IOM-produced documentaries on migration at the Spanish Cultural Center in Managua.

Construyendo Esperanzas: El Reto de la Reintegración (Building Hope: The Challenges of Reintegration) focuses on the hurdles faced by migrants returning to their country of origin.  It is based on an IOM initiative that began in 2007 in Chinandega, Nicaragua. The project has now expanded across Central America, assisting returnees and victims of trafficking to reintegrate successfully into their home communities.

Protección de los Derechos de los Migrantes Nicaragüenses en España (Protection the Rights of Nicaraguan Migrants in Spain) engages the viewer with first-hand accounts by Nicaraguan migrants living in Spain.  Their testimony describes social exclusion, loneliness, their lack of information and abuse in the work place.

The outcome was an IOM project designed to protect Nicaraguan migrants’ rights in Spain. Funded by IOM’s Development Fund and implemented in close coordination with Nicaragua’s Foreign Ministry, it  provides better consular protection for migrants through “mobile consulates,” a website  and a Facebook page, where migrants can post questions and seek advice.

An estimated 800,000 Nicaraguans live abroad.  The main destination countries for Nicaraguan migrants are Costa Rica and the United States. In recent years, Spain, El Salvador and Panama have also become preferred destinations.

The screenings, each of which will be followed by a discussion, are part of the Spanish Cultural Center’s Colectivos de Cine (Film Collectives). The documentaries will be shown Wednesday 30 April at 6:30 p.m.  For more information on the event please visit: http://www.ccenicaragua.org/2014/04/30/colectivos-de-cine-con-la-oim/

An IOM photo exhibit: Faces and Human Rights of Nicaraguan Migrants in Spain will also be on display at the Center from 28 April to 2 May - 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
