Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context
Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Legal Counsel, Department of Legal Affairs and the Division Head, Contract Law Division (LEGCR), under the direct supervision of the LEGCR Manila Unit Head and in coordination with other colleagues in the Department of Legal Affairs, the successful candidate will be responsible for giving legal advice on various contractual issues as well as negotiating, drafting and reviewing contracts, to protect IOM’s legal interests.
Core Functions / Responsibilities

Negotiate and draft contracts necessary for IOM’s operations and activities, including funding, procurement and implementation of IOM projects.

Provide legal advice on contract provisions, identifying legal risks and proposing workable solutions for mitigation.

Advise colleagues worldwide on the appropriate contractual structure for new projects and relevant legal implications.

Provide legal advice on contract termination and on contractual disputes.

Assist the Unit Head and Division Head in knowledge management, including through developing new contract templates and improving existing templates.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
Education
-
Master’s degree in Law from an accredited academic institution, with two years of recent professional experience (see below); or,
-
Bachelor’s degree in Law from an accredited academic institution, with four years of recent professional experience (see below).

Certificate of passing the national bar examination.
Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience
-
Recent practising experience in contract law obtained either working as a lawyer inhouse in a legal department of a company, international organization or non-governmental organization, or in a law firm.

Experience advising on international legal issues, including cross-border transactions and private international law, an advantage.

Excellent legal research, drafting and negotiation skills. Dispute resolution skills, desirable.

Excellent knowledge of contract law and ability to apply it in practice.

Excellent communication skills.
Languages
For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is desirable.
