Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. Context
Under the direct supervision of the Global Migration Health Research & Epidemiology (MHD Research) Coordinator in IOM Berlin and in close coordination with the Migration Health Informatics (MHI) Manager in IOM Valencia, the MHI Data Analytics Officer in IOM MAC, and the MHD Research Team in MAC, the successful candidate will support the MHD Research Unit in data analysis and reporting projects, for internal and external use.
Core Functions / Responsibilities
- Identify appropriate data sources for analytics projects and explore potential process improvements in overall data management.
- Support the team in translating data into analytics and reporting requirements that inform senior leadership and data-driven decisions.
- Provide an understanding or knowledge of the data that would otherwise not be detected without the application of advanced analytical methods such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, predictive analytics, data and text mining, natural language processing, statistics, and the use of relevant algorithms and computational approaches.
- Develop and support the implementation of various migration health data products for analysis and reporting (e.g. data warehouse management) and support MHD institutional data collection, reporting and knowledge management systems.
- Prepare data sets/databases emergent for health assessment program and other IOM platforms capturing health related data (e.g. DHIS2, ePHR,) to perform analysis of data (e.g. on medical conditions found during pre-screening and clinical consultations of migrant populations).
- Support the technical review of health assessment projects (e.g. ICD-10 autocoding project) and contribute to production of research output and reports for internal and external use.
- Lead the development/enrichment of MHD-related databases (e.g. Health Information Management System database, MHD research/publications database, Migration Health Research Portal, health related databases in GDI) in aspects of database management, integrity, access etc.
- In coordination with focal persons in the MHI Unit, lead tasks that involve the use of the migration health data warehouse and other data sources, including dimensional data models that address MHD reporting needs, as well as tasks that support the development and maintenance of regular and adhoc reports and data analysis. This includes the coordination of data quality checks with the MHI Unit to support the preparation of validated datasets for research.

Education
- Master’s degree in data science, information management, information technology, computer science, statistics, medical informatics, public health, epidemiology, health sciences, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two (2) years of relevant professional experience; or,
- University degree in the above fields with four (4) years of relevant professional experience.
Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience
- A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in data science, exploratory data analytics, time-series analysis, or related areas.
- Experience in the management and processing of large and complex databases.
- Use of statistical software like Stata, R, or SPSS.
- Use of programming languages like SQL, or Python.
- Knowledge of integrating Power BI with other Microsoft tools and third-party applications
- Experience in Microsoft Synapse or Fabric data analytics is an advantage.
- Involvement in health or medical research projects.
- Statistical Analysis: Strong grasp of statistical concepts and their application to various datasets including hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and other advanced statistical techniques to identify patterns, correlations, and trends.
- Data Interpretation: Skill in interpreting data to identify trends, patterns, and outliers.
- Data Manipulation: Strong skills in using appropriate programming languages or tools for data manipulation (i.e., data cleaning, transformation, and integration) to prepare data for analysis.
- Data Mining: Proficiency in data mining techniques to discover valuable patterns and insights in large datasets.
- Programming: Strong programming skills in languages commonly used in data science, such as Python or R. Additionally, an understanding of coding good practices, version control, and code documentation is desirable.
Languages
For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is desirable.
