At the request of the Government of Vanuatu, IOM will support Vanuatu to better integrate traditional knowledge, social and cultural systems, and environmentally sustainable practices into displacement management, focusing on preparedness for mass displacement in the context of volcanic eruptions. Displacement from disasters, can threaten the survival of traditional knowledge and culture. Traditional knowledge and social and cultural practices also offer important cultural safety nets, especially in response to disasters. The project's objective is to improve Government and community preparedness for displacement from volcanic eruptions by strengthening the use and awareness of traditional knowledge, social and cultural practices and networks, and environmentally sustainable practices in displacement planning and management. Under Outcome 1, the project will complete a social and cultural mapping of two pilot communities in Vanuatu, then develop community and government resources for displacement preparedness based on the findings. Under Outcome 2, gender-sensitive public-facing communications products showcasing the methods and outcomes of the study will be developed and disseminated, to increase public awareness and preparedness.
