Safe cross border movements of people and goods are key to a nation’s development and stability, as well as recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. This is particularly vital for Pacific Island Countries (PICs) – among the most remote countries on earth – with economies heavily reliant on tourism, international trade and remittance flows. The overall objective that guides the proposed project is to contribute to ensuring safe and effective migration and border management in the Pacific. To achieve the overall objective, the proposed project will conduct a feasibility study focusing on the interoperability between IOM’s Border Management Information System MIDAS and UNCTAD’s Customs Management System ASYCUDA, which will inform the development of an updated Integrated Border Management Strategy in Vanuatu. In Tonga, the project will carry out a needs assessment on border infrastructure at the immigration headquarters and Fua'amotu International Airport, install and operationalize MIDAS at those two locations, implement a MIDAS-ASYCUDA interoperability pilot and provide related capacity building activities for government officials.
