Tajikistan
The Government of Tajikistan recently approved the National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change of Tajikistan for the period up to 2030, where migration is identified as a cross-cutting issue. The Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan is leading the development of the Action Plan for the Implementation of the National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change of Tajikistan for the period up to 2030 and the first National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and plans to develop the Fifth National Communication to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. These initiatives will strengthen governance, coordination, and institutional arrangements for climate change adaptation planning, implementation, and monitoring in Tajikistan. The national planning and communication initiatives need to recognize the different forms of migration in the context of climate change and their diverse outcomes, to create enabling conditions necessary to unlock the adaptation potential of migration and reduce the risks related to it.
Over 24 months, this project will contribute to supporting the Government of Tajikistan's strategic vision on climate change adaptation, through the development of the First National Adaptation Plan and Fifth National Communication to the UNFCCC. The project aims that the government institutions will mainstream migration considerations in the drafts of the First National Adaptation Plan and Fifth National Communication to the United Nations Framework Conventions on Climate Change (Outcome 1). To this end, the project will ensure that the national stakeholders have improved evidence-based knowledge and understanding of the migration, environment, and climate change nexus in Tajikistan to guide policy development (Output 1.1); government stakeholders have tools and capacities to mainstream the migration, environment, and climate change nexus considerations into the First National Adaptation Plan and Fifth National Communication of Tajikistan in a gender-sensitive manner (Output 1.2); and the migration, environment, and climate change nexus in Tajikistan, as well as the need for improved national sectoral policies on this issue, are made visible globally (Output 1.3).
