Morocco
Due to its particular geographical position, at the junction between Europe and Africa, Morocco represents a country of origin, transit and destination for a large number of migrants moving within the continent. Recently, just like Fez, Tangier or Casablanca, the city of Agadir has become a coveted city for international migrants. Difficulties still remain when it comes to determining exact estimates of the number of migrants present in the municipality of Agadir, as well as their profile, intentions and needs. These migrants face a number of challenges that stand in the way of their socio-economic stability, and integration. This project stems from a request from the Municipality of Agadir to identify challenges faced by migrants in terms of integration and to formulate responses to address those challenges.
In light of the above, the objective of this project is to contribute to the existing efforts of the Government of Morocco in promoting migrant integration.
The project will seek to do so by supporting the existing efforts of the Municipality of Agadir and relevant local actors to address the challenges related to migrant integration in the city of Agadir using an evidence-based and whole-of-society approach (Outcome 1) by carrying out an analysis of the specific and gender-sensitive integration needs and challenges of migrants in the city of Agadir (Output 1.1) and implementing community-led and government-supported pilot initiatives in the city of Agadir on the basis of the needs and challenges identified (Output 1.2). This project will pilot an innovative IOM instrument, the Urban Diagnostics Tool, with the aim of replicating the initiative in other cities in Morocco, and beyond.
