Jamaica
The objective of this project is to support the Government of Jamaica to modernize its remittance Industry. IOM understands remittances as multidirectional, voluntary, and private international In Jamaica, a large majority of the recipients of the remittances are unbanked and the high transfer costs and inconvenient methods of sending transfers may impact the sustainability and increase in remittance flows in the future. As such the Government of Jamaica and key stakeholders have recognized the need to modernize the remittance industry to ensure efficiency, lower transaction costs and by extension maintain or increase future inflows.
The above objective will be achieved through the following outputs: 1) the establishment of a Steering Committee composed by both government officials and the private sector; 2) the development of a strategic analysis of the remittance industry in Jamaica which will provide the government with key data on the current legislative, regulatory, policy and institutional framework with recommendations for improving these frameworks to ensure that remittances effectively contribute to national development; 3) the review of the current remittance platforms and channels with recommendations on how to transform and modernize them in accordance with global advances and best practices; and finally, 4) a detailed action plan on how to expand the monitoring of remittances to include other cash transfers and in kind contributions in an effort to better capture all types of contributions and how they impact Jamaica's development.
