In recent years, the state of the environment in Mali has been characterised by degradation linked to the combined effects of human activity and climate change. The effects of climate change are having a direct impact on the livelihoods of a large proportion of the Malian population. Recent IOM studies indicate that climate change is contributing to the departure of large numbers of migrants. Some of Mali's policy frameworks recognise the impact of climate shocks on migration, while admitting that state tools for collecting data on the impacts of climate change in areas of high migration remain limited. The integration of human mobility into Mali's environmental governance tools needs to be strengthened both at the national and local level. In light of the above, the objective of the project is to contribute to strengthening Mali's environmental governance through climate change adaptation policies and measures integrating human mobility and gender. The project will seek to do so by supporting the integration of migration and gender in the implementation of the National Environmental Protection Policy (PNPE) (Outcome 1) by carrying out participatory diagnoses on human mobility and gender equality in climate change adaptation practices in the regions of Kita, Nioro and Sikasso (Output 1. 1) and by integrating human mobility and women's empowerment into the 2024-2028 Action Plan of the PNPE on the basis of the diagnoses (Output 1.2). In addition, the project will enable local development planning processes to strengthen the climate resilience of communities in the Nioro region (Outcome 2) by integrating human mobility and gender equality considerations into the Economic, Social and Cultural Development Plans of the communes of Diarrah, Diaye Coura and Gavinané (Output 2.1) and by promoting the resilience and livelihood adaptation strategies of affected rural communities (Output 2.2).
