In 2021, Solomon Islands affirmed its interest in acceding to the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children (TIP Protocol). In May 2024, this was also included in the new Government’s 100-day policy priorities. However, compliance concerns with UNTOC and the TIP Protocol have been identified, which the Solomon Islands Government aims to address through revised legislation. The proposed intervention will support Solomon Islands Government with a focus on two outcomes: 1) Solomon Islands commits to adopting an Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act that is compliant with the requirements of UNTOC and the TIP Protocol; and 2) Law enforcement actors in Solomon Islands identify and assist victims of trafficking in a way that is victim centred, gender and child-sensitive, trauma-informed and rights-based. Through assistance to draft an Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act (Output 1.1) and capacity development for key officials (Output 2.1), this project aims to support improved outcomes on human trafficking cases in Solomon Islands and strengthen access to justice for victims of all genders and ages.
