Benefiting Member States
Peru
The enhanced involvement of nationals living abroad in home country development is one of the recent migratory policies that South American countries are starting to implement within the context of obligations that States have towards their nationals residing abroad. After having worked for three years in this direction, the Peruvian Government decided to reinforce this policy of involvement and requested the cooperation of IOM to help provide the necessary elements. This project aimed to achieve the following goals:
- The improvement of living conditions of the Peruvians living abroad through the strengthening of the links with their country of origin.
- Support the formulation of policies and proper programs through provision of better and opportune information to policy makers.
- Development of a new methodology to collect information from diasporas, through consulates.
- To pick up better experiences of international processes of involvement of nationals living abroad.
- To contribute to promote the empowerment of the consulates and Chancellery of a new and systematized methodology to better register Peruvian living abroad.
- The organization and distribution of information obtained by the study to the most important sectors of the country.
- The settings up of appropriate actions that promote the cultural, economic and social exchange and allow more active links with the country.
