Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are on the front lines of climate change and face increasingly frequent and intense rapid and slow onset hazards. Such hazards are both direct and indirect drivers of migration across of the Pacific. The governments of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and Kiribati recognize climate change adaptation (CCA) as the key long-term solution for strengthening the resilience of their communities and economies. Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are ideally positioned to connect local knowledge with government CCA strategies. Given this, the “Strengthening NGOs to Promote Climate Change Adaptation Across and Displacement Prevention Measures in Micronesia” project proposes to strengthen climate adaptation strategies and displacement prevention measures in FSM, RMI and Kiribati by increasing the capacities of CSOs and NGOs to implement CCA-related projects and to strengthen partnerships with other partners and donors. Towards this objective, IOM will organize capacity-building workshops for CSOs and NGOs and award a Small Grants Award for eight eligible NGOs across the three countries. The grants will consist of stand-alone climate action projects that promote climate resilience to address the impacts of climate change on migration decisions for communities and individuals. Following the successful implementation of the Awards, IOM will organize an event for the awarded CSOs/NGOs to showcase their capacity to their respective national partners, with a goal of ensuring sustainable relationships between the two.
