The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in 2018, with El Salvador as one of the signatory countries (and a Champion Country). Subsequently, the United Nations Network on Migration (RNUM for its acronym in Spanish) was formed to coordinate the UN agencies’ actions related to migration governance. The implementation of the GCM in El Salvador was spearheaded with the creation of the National Coordination Mechanism on Human Mobility (MCNMH for its acronym in Spanish) in 2023, which includes different government entities. Furthermore, a GCM National Implementation Plan was developed in 2023, a tool to guide the Government of El Salvador in meeting the objectives of the GCM. This project aims to contribute to safe, orderly and regular migration in El Salvador in accordance with the objectives and principles of the GCM.
To achieve this objective, the government of El Salvador and UN agencies will implement initiatives and coordination mechanisms that promote good migration governance in line with international standards (Outcome 1). Specifically, the RNUM in El Salvador will be strengthened to address migration with a gender approach and in line with international standards (Output 1.1); and the MCNMH will be provided with the technical capacities for the execution and monitoring of the GCM National Implementation Plan (Output 1.2).
