Addressing the pressing concerns of combating trafficking in persons (TiP) and protecting vulnerable populations, particularly youth and women, is of paramount importance in Turkmenistan. Socio-economic pressures and the impact of COVID-19 have increased the exposure to situations of vulnerability, especially for young people and women, leading to seek limited options or external migration, and, in turn, making them easy targets for TiP. In light of these dynamics and in alignment with the country's priorities, this initiative aims to support Turkmenistan's efforts to counter TiP. The goal is to integrate a survivor-centered, gender- and age-sensitive approach that adheres to international standards and best practices. The key outcome of the project is to promote such approach among relevant entities within the Government and Parliament of Turkmenistan. By acquiring new knowledge and tools, including the adoption of an updated Counter-Trafficking National Action Plan (CTIP NAP), inclusive of specific actions targeting women and youth, these entities will be better equipped to counter the crime, prevent it, and address the specific needs of survivors, ensuring a comprehensive and tailored response. The project, developed in close synergy with national counterparts and following a whole-of-society approach, represents a significant step towards reducing cases of trafficking and exploitation in and from Turkmenistan.
