Zimbabwe
Being a country of origin, transit and destination for migrants, Zimbabwe is characterized by complex mixed-migration dynamics that pose both challenges and opportunities for migration management. Because Zimbabwe lacks tools and systems to comprehensively and efficiently collect, store, analyse and use migration data, policymaking on migration is not always informed by sound evidence and cannot therefore propose strategic, effective and sustainable responses. Critical data gaps in Zimbabwe's result from challenges such as lack of capacity of, and limited coordination among, relevant stakeholders, limited resources to focus on migration data and limited coverage of migration data collection.
The proposed project seeks to contribute to enhance evidence-based policymaking and programming on all aspects of migration. This will be achieved by (i) establishing a Migration Statistics Technical Working Group (MSTWG) with key government ministries, departments and agencies (Output 1.1); (ii) supporting the development of a gender-sensitive baseline assessment report and set of recommendations on current data collection practices and level of understanding on the importance of migration data (Output 1.2) (iii) supporting the development of a gender-sensitive National Migration Data Strategy guided by the findings and recommendations from the assessment (Output 1.3) and (iv) assisting in the development of an Action Plan for the implementation of the data strategy and other baseline assessment recommendations (Output 1.4).
