Zambia continues to face multifaceted and complex migration challenges that include irregular and mixed-migration, human trafficking, smuggling of persons, forced displacement, long porous borders, inadequate disaggregated migration data, strain on urban and social amenities, smuggling of goods and untapped development potential of labour migration and remittances. Availability of quality, timely, reliable, accessible and comparable migration data is the lifeblood for effective policy formulation and good migration governance. While the Government of Zambia appreciates the importance of evidence-based migration management, it recognizes that there are still inadequacies in the collection, storage, management, analysis, sharing and utilization of migration data in the country. The project therefore seeks to contribute to evidence-based migration management in Zambia to facilitate and promote efficient better migration data collection, management and use. To achieve this, the project will support the development of a National Migration Data Strategy (Output 1.1), a National Compendium with gender-sensitive migration data variables, indicators and sources mapped and harmonized/standardized (Output 1.2), a mechanism for migration data exchange among relevant stakeholders (Output 1.3), an electronic Integrated Migration Data and Information Management System and an accompanying Database (Output 2.2). To complement these deliverables, it will ensure that relevant government officials have enhanced capacities to work with migration data.
