Cabo Verde
The municipality of Praia in Cabo Verde is the area where most migrants are concentrated, and according to the National Statistics Institute, about 55,8 per cent of migrants work in the informal economy.
Within the COVID-19 pandemic context and due to the mobility restrictions, most of the migrants have seen their income decreased, which has also largely impacted on their ability to make savings, send remittances, invest, and access to education and health services, among other things.
In this context, this project aims to strengthen the capacity of the municipality of Praia to support the economic recovery of migrant workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, enabling them to live in the context of the pandemic and restore their self-sustaining capacity.
In pursuit of this objective, IOM will first develop an assessment report, conducting an in-depth research on the impact of COVID-19 on migrant workers living in the municipality of Praia.
This report will support the revision of the Praia Municipality’s existing 2019-2023 action plan to integrate immigrants. In addition, IOM will install and equip two training rooms to conduct face-to-face and online training sessions on finance education, entrepreneurship and business management for the migrant workers and support its pilot implementation, building the capacity of 100 migrant workers, selected within the framework of this project. Furthermore, IOM will support the development of a manual and train the service providers of the municipality to best support migrant workers in vulnerable situations due to the pandemic and improve their overall integration. Lastly, IOM will support the Municipality of Praia in the launch of a pilot start-up challenge with the objective of financing the most promising business project ideas, developed by the trained migrant workers, through in-kind support.
