Labour mobility continues to be at the heart of Tonga's economic development. Although the economic benefits of labour mobility schemes are self-evident and will continue to be a feature of the Tongan migration landscape, the challenge for policymakers will be to manage the future evolution of these schemes in a way that identifies and minimises its negative impacts and maximises its sustainable development benefits.
In light of the above, the objective of the project is to contribute to strengthened regular pathways, particularly for labour mobility, by the Government of Tonga.
The project will seek to do so by supporting the Government of Tonga to address gaps in the governance of labour mobility in an evidence-based manner (Outcome 1) by developing a protection-centred and gender-sensitive Migration Profile for Tonga, with particular emphasis on labour mobility to support the Migration and Sustainable Development Policy Unit with future evidence-based programming (Output 1.1) and setting up a Migrant Resource Centre to assist migrants with information and services for informed decision-making (Output 1.2).
