In partnership with the Office of Commerce Investment and Tourism (OCIT), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Commerce, Women United Together Marshall Islands (WUTMI) and the Jibron Ae (Women) Entrepreneurs Network, the proposed project will support the Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands in its journey to economic self-reliance through the design and implementation of a new innovative pilot programme for women from selected rural destinations to start and manage their own businesses in tourism. The project will provide government agencies and other national stakeholders working in commerce, investment, and tourism with new evidence to support rural tourism development and related women-owned enterprises in the context of unique mobility dynamics of the RMI. Harnessing the potential for domestic tourism, the blue economy and “green” tourism, this livelihood diversification pilot initiative will employ a value chain technique through which at least three businesses are developed. The project will address the major issue of rural to urban migration, as outlined in the RMI National Strategic Plan 2030, by providing alternate livelihood opportunities for rural communities while supporting national resilience and upholding land and culture. Key project outputs include a market study and feasibility assessment; planning and capacity building; rollout of the pilot; and capturing lessons learned.
