IOM will set up and launch a resource mobilization strategy labelled Migrants for Migrants (M4M). This strategy will focus on communication and targeting individuals that can support the response to the increasing number of return and reintegration needs in El Salvador and the Northern Triangle in Central America. For many migrants, staying connected to families and friends is a big priority. Evolving migration patterns and global socio economic and political dynamics in North America that will most likely increase and impact the potential of returning migrants in Central America is creating a larger need for support to returning population. The digital economy and increasing connectivity are opening new spaces and opportunities for people to connect and conduct transactions globally. International transfers are continuously getting cheaper and more efficient.
The current global context is improving the connection between diaspora and their home countries along with the potential for their contributions and investments. The establishment of an online crowdfunding platform, called Migrants for Migrants – M4M – can connect returnees, diaspora, private sector, home communities and government institutions throughout local projects, opportunities to donate, and investments in their countries, as a mean to harness migration impact on country’s economy. The M4M network will support individual returnees, and community efforts to improve the lives of migrants, their families, and home communities, throughout the entire return cycle.
IOM´s M4M initiative will be an efficient strategy that will allow migrants or members of Diaspora to connect with migrant returnees and support their reintegration in El Salvador. Online services will allow IOM to: a) properly communicate with a broader audience the challenges returnees face, b) channel and communicate with interested supporters and investors the use of their contributions and impact achieved, and c) collect, channel and process funds, contributions and investment for returnee projects in El Salvador and gradually the larger Northern Triangle of Central America.
