This project aims to support the Government of Lesotho to mobilize diaspora health professionals to enhance their involvement and contribution to the health sector in order to mitigate labour shortages.
In close collaboration with government officials and other relevant stakeholders, a needs assessment of the health sector in Lesotho as well as a mapping of the locations and profiles of the Basotho diaspora in South Africa, the U.K., and the U.S.A will be undertaken. A national stakeholders’ consultation will be held to discuss the findings and recommendations of the mapping report and will agree on a roadmap for future action with regard to the mobilization of diaspora resources and capturing the diaspora’s interest in the development of their country.
In addition, this project will facilitate virtual lectures at the newly-established hospital in Maseru (Mamohato Hospital) as well as host a diaspora engagement training seminar and roundtable for Lesotho government officials and partners. This initiative will serve as a pilot project for the establishment of a longer-term programme focusing on the contribution of doctors and nurses from the selected countries, including the temporary and permanent return.
