Egypt
The Middle East and North Africa region is witnessing complex mobility dynamics, including labour migration, forced displacement and mixed migration flows. Sensationalism in the media around migration cultivates false beliefs, misconceptions and prejudice which are then widely disseminated. There is a need to examine current migration dynamics and challenges and look for durable and sustainable solutions that enhance migration protection and resilience mechanisms through the collection of high-quality data and information, rigorous research as well as policy analysis and development. IOM Egypt worked with the Government of Egypt to establish a Migration Research Unit (MRU) at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science (FEPS) at Cairo University, through Phase I of this project.
Through Phase II, this project aims to contribute to the promotion of evidence-based policy making through the development of a research hub for learning, knowledge production and information sharing on migration. This will be achieved through two outcomes, namely (1) Cairo University manages and sustains the Migration Research Unit, and (2) Policy makers and involved stakeholders, such as the research and academic communities, engage on migration public debate through gender-sensitive and solution-oriented policy research on migration issues. These outcomes will be reached through three outputs, as follows: (1.1) The Migration Research Unit is well developed with structured and gender sensitive knowledge content and clear pedagogical practice at the faculty of Political Science and Economics within Cairo University, (1.2) The Migration Research Unit has a well-prepared gender-sensitive migration fast-track pilot learning programme for undergraduate and post-graduate students at Cairo University, and (2.1) Policy makers and involved stakeholders have improved knowledge on national migration policy frameworks and the vulnerabilities of migrants in Egypt.
