The Government of Malawi is currently in the process of creating a Department of Migration within the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Public Security (MIAPS). MIAPS has mentioned the development of a comprehensive national migration policy as one of the department’s top priorities; however, at present, there is a severe lack of reliable data available on migration in the country. As a result, the government has requested support from the IOM to develop a National Migration Profile in order to collect, analyse, and report on migration-related data currently scattered across a wide range of ministries, departments, and agencies.
