The initiative aims to bolster the Government of the Republic of Maldives' efforts in responding to the health needs of migrant workers, particularly those employed in the tourism industry in the country. It will achieve this by fostering multi-sectoral coordination and collaboration on migration health data and data-driven health risk management plans, involving both health and non-health entities, including tourist resorts.
As per its key outcome, the project plans to support relevant national authorities with knowledge capture and sharing, primarily by enhancing data management capacities of the Health Protection Agency under the Ministry of Health. This endeavour will facilitate the collection of comprehensive data, essential for supporting evidence-based contingency planning by the Ministry to manage health risks effectively.
In particular, the project's key activities include the development of a migrant health data platform that will provide crucial health-related information about migrant workers in the tourism sector, and the establishment of frameworks and coordination mechanisms for migration data-driven health management planning. Furthermore, the project will integrate training programs and for enumerators to administer an updated and migration-sensitive Maldives Demographic Health Survey. To ensure data validity and efficiency, the project will revise existing legal frameworks and establish robust coordination mechanisms among relevant parties. Expert input will be sought to review and advise on current policies, with ongoing assistance from the IOM to the Ministry of Health regarding administrative regulations related to migrant healthcare management.
