Migrants are key contributors to the economic development of the Maldives. The Ministry of Economic Development (MED) in the Maldives is undertaking several initiatives to improve the living and working condition of the migrants, but interlinkages between key policy objectives need to be discussed in a coordinated manner and incorporated in an integrated approach to development. The proposed project will include three distinct, mutually reinforcing components: a) the drafting of a Labour Migration Assessment, b) the development of an Integrated Border Management (IBM) strategy, and c) the creation, based on these two pieces and other existing thematic assessments, of an overall Migration Policy for the Maldives. The Migration Policy will facilitate economic growth in the country in a migrant-inclusive manner, and the Labour Migration Assessment and IBM strategy will contribute to evidence-based sustainable economic development by facilitating mobility and trade while safeguarding the country’s national security.
