Maldives
In Maldives, there are approximately 179,000 migrant workers, with more than 63,000 estimated as undocumented. Most of them originate from Bangladesh and India and undocumented migrants often face challenges in accessing health care and legal services and may fear employment termination or deportation. This project aims to establish a Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) in the Greater Male’ Area serving as a one-stop source for providing independent and impartial information, advice and outreach services to migrants. It will offer a safe space for existing migrants in Maldives to obtain accurate information on regularization programmes and/or repatriation options, the documentation required, migrants’ existing labour rights and how to stay safe and healthy during the migration process. To ensure migrants’ rights are protected, the project will collect and disseminate disaggregated migration data generated through the MRC and share it with relevant government stakeholders to advocate for evidence-based policy making. Towards the end of the project, an action plan will be developed and adopted by the government on the way forward for utilizing accurate and disaggregated migration data as a basis for evidence-based policy making and sustaining the MRC to ensure enhanced protection services and safe migration in Maldives.
