The Middle East and North Africa region is one of the most severely affected by the evolving impacts of climate change. It has always experienced harsh climatic conditions, including low rainfall, water shortages, frequent flooding, extreme temperatures and droughts. However, despite the availability of information on the diversity of environmental impacts, relatively little empirical data is available on the migration they induce in the national context of Morocco. Therefore, understanding the link between climate change and environmental degradation, human security, fragility, violence and conflict, and the impact of this link on mobility dynamics, is a critical concern for Morocco. In light of the above, the objective of this project is to support the Government of Morocco in addressing climate change-induced migration through the integration of migration into environment and climate change policy planning. To do so, the project will focus on the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima and Souss-Massa regions, as they represent pilot regions in Morocco which have initiated work on the development of their own territorial climate plans. The project will thus work towards its objective by leading these pilot regions to integrate gender-sensitive migration considerations into their territorial climate change policy and planning (Outcome 1) by building the knowledge of governmental and non-governmental stakeholders in the pilot regions on the migration, environment and climate change (MECC) nexus through empirical studies on the MECC nexus in the pilot regions (Output 1.1); by strengthening the capacity of governmental and non-governmental stakeholders in the pilot regions to formulate and implement policies and initiatives related to climate change-induced migration (Output 1.2); and by enabling evidence-based advocacy on the MECC nexus by governmental and non-governmental stakeholders (Output 1.3). In this way, the project will set an exemplary foundation for future research and programming on the MECC nexus at a national scale.
