The overall objective of the project is to contribute to improved cooperation on border governance for the safe, orderly and regular movement of people, goods and services between Lesotho and South Africa, in line with the vision of the Bi-National Commission. Established in November 2021, the Commission's primary objective is to facilitate human mobility and trade between the two countries. The project's Objective will be achieved through one Outcome: The Governments of Lesotho and South Africa take steps towards the adoption and implementation of a new migration management model that facilitates sustainable and responsive regular migration channels. To achieve this Outcome, the project will conduct an assessment on the socio-economic needs of borderline communities, inclusive of gender-related impacts, challenges and mobility flows (Output 1.1); produce a consolidated research report that will recommend a proposed migration management model between Lesotho and South Africa (Output 1.2); ensure border officials from Lesotho and South Africa have improved knowledge and skills to facilitate safe and regular migration in preparation for the implementation of the new cross-border model (Output 1.3); and lastly, undertake information campaigns and mobile registration clinics to ensure that border communities in Lesotho and South Africa can regularize their movement through the provision of legal identity documents (Output 1.4).
