Salinity intrusion, cyclones, and storm surges are all significant negative drivers of migration and displacement in Bangladesh's 710-kilometer-long coastal belt, which covers 19 districts. Drought and dwindling freshwater resources have forced residents to relocate in the country's north, landslides have made people homeless in the hill tracts, and riverbank and coastal erosion have displaced people all around the country. Climate-related migration will increase in Bangladesh as a result of these challenges and the more frequent and intense rapid and slow-onset disasters that are anticipated, necessitating effective responses from the government and other key stakeholders.
To address these challenges, this project will develop the first ever Migration, Environment and Climate Change profile for Bangladesh, which will capture the current national-level climate change dynamics in the country and serve as a comprehensive and holistic tool for policymakers and other stakeholders to use when considering issues related to climate migration. The project will also create a locally tailored online climate migration capacity strengthening package and will support capacity development among key policymakers at the national, district and upazila (sub-district) levels. Together, these interventions will begin to fill the gaps in data and capacities of the Government of Bangladesh, equipping them to better respond to the adverse effects of climate change on human mobility in the country.
