Kenya is prone to extreme weather conditions resulting in climate-induced disasters, such as droughts, floods and landslides. While Kenya has committed to several international agreements, policies and strategies on disaster risk reduction and management, implementation remains slow due to the pending enactment of the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Bill and the lack of harmonized guidelines and governance, both at the national and local levels. Upon requests from the Ministry of Devolution, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (MOD-ASALs), and certain county authorities, the objective of this project is to support the national government's migration-related capacities in disaster risk preparedness, response, and recovery in the context of natural hazards. This is achieved through the development of a draft National Shelter Strategy and assistance to county governments in strengthening their coordination mechanisms and DRM frameworks, in the context of inclusive, gender- and vulnerability-sensitive emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and return and reintegration for persons internally displaced by natural hazards. The project aims to strengthen active and inclusive coordination mechanisms between national and county government key agencies, including main humanitarian and development actors.
